Marvel Super Heroes: The First Community Reactions to the New Magic: The Gathering Set
How is Marvel Super Heroes being received by the Magic community? We spoke with Nina as well as Maggi & JJ about their first impressions, favorite cards, Commander decks, and expectations for the new Magic: The Gathering set. Discover why opinions range from great excitement to cautious skepticism and which aspects of the set players find most intriguing.
On June 26, 2026, Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes will be released, a new Universes Beyond set that brings together Magic: The Gathering and the Marvel Universe. Even before the official launch, players will have the opportunity to experience the set for the first time during Prerelease events from June 19–25, 2026.
This set combines two iconic worlds: the strategic gameplay of Magic: The Gathering and the legendary characters of the Marvel Universe. Heroes, villains, and fan-favorite characters enter the battlefield alongside new locations, unique card treatments, and fresh gameplay concepts.
The set also offers plenty for collectors. Highlights include the new Mind Stone as part of the Infinity Stones, borderless Classic Comic cards, Source Material cards featuring iconic Marvel artwork, and distinctive Logo cards showcasing popular characters. As a result, the set blends beloved Marvel themes with Magic mechanics while placing a strong emphasis on comic-book aesthetics and collectibility.
Mechanically, the set introduces exciting new gameplay elements as well. Abilities such as Supercharge, Team-Up, and Plan are designed to bring the superhero experience directly to the tabletop and demonstrate how closely Marvel themes can be integrated into Magic gameplay.
But how does the community feel about this major crossover? Is excitement high, or are players approaching it with caution? Will the new cards immediately find their way into Commander decks, or will the collectible aspect take center stage for many players?
To find out, we spoke with Nina as well as Maggi & JJ. They shared their first impressions, expectations for the set, and how they typically experience new Magic releases.
Our Interview Partners
Nina
Nina is a passionate Magic player and collector. She feels most at home in Commander and Sealed formats. She follows every new set from the very beginning of preview season and enjoys analyzing which cards can improve existing decks or enable entirely new strategies.

Maggi & JJ
Maggi & JJ are enthusiastic Commander players and collectors. For them, the shared gameplay experience is what matters most. They look at new releases not only from a collector’s perspective but also with an eye toward exciting new deck-building possibilities.

1. What is your first impression of the new Marvel Super Heroes set?
Nina
My excitement is definitely growing. The first cards have already been revealed, and the initial spark is there. The Marvel Super Heroes lineup looks fantastic and clearly shows a strong focus on attracting new players. With Starter Decks, the Starter Set, and Jumpstart products, there are plenty of entry points into the world of Magic.
Whether the long-time Magic community will fully embrace it remains to be seen, but the first impression is certainly positive. Even in the earliest previews, you can already see the attention to detail in the design. It genuinely feels like an effort to combine the best aspects of both franchises into a cohesive Magic product.
Maggi & JJ
Another Marvel set 😜. We're not particularly invested in Marvel, so the announcement didn't excite us too much—though we don't see that as a negative thing.
Our impression: Opinions already differ significantly at first glance. While Nina is very enthusiastic about the early reveals, Maggi & JJ approach the set much more cautiously.
2. In 2–3 words: How would you describe the set?
Sometimes just a few words are enough to capture a first impression. Our interview partners accepted the challenge:
Nina
Superheroes Smash
Maggi & JJ
Superheroes, Powerstone, Draft Night.
Our impression: Even these short answers reveal different perspectives. Nina immediately associates Marvel Super Heroes with action, iconic characters, and spectacular moments. Maggi & JJ, on the other hand, focus on the gameplay experience, from new cards and exciting draft nights to opportunities for Commander players.
3. Do you follow spoilers before release, or do you prefer going into a new set with little prior knowledge?
Nina
Preview shows, spoilers, and even Commander precon deck techs are always on my roadmap before a set release. They help build excitement, provide early insights into mechanics and themes, and allow me to start thinking about the set in advance.
Seeing the set revealed piece by piece also gives each card room to shine and sparks plenty of ideas and imagination. I don't follow every single daily reveal obsessively, but I do enjoy checking in regularly to see what's new.
JJ
I prefer not to look at spoilers and enjoy being surprised when I crack open my first booster pack.
Maggi
I enjoy looking at spoilers and immediately start thinking about which cards could fit into my Commander decks or whether there are any exciting new commanders to build around.
Interesting: This question already highlights different approaches within the community. While Nina enjoys following the preview season closely, JJ prefers complete surprise, and Maggi sees spoilers as inspiration for future deckbuilding.
4. What do you typically do around the release of a new set?
Nina
Prerelease events are always a fixed date in my calendar. They're a great opportunity to learn the new set in an environment where everyone starts on equal footing. Nobody fully knows the cards yet, and deckbuilding is a fresh challenge for everyone.
Maggi & JJ
We usually enjoy spending time together at home, opening the new products, and making an evening out of it with some snacks.
If we're particularly excited about a set, we'll also grab tickets for a Prerelease event and enjoy the atmosphere there.
5. Do you prefer building your own decks from boosters, or do you also enjoy playing preconstructed decks? Which precon from the new set interests you the most, and why?
Nina
Honestly, both. I love building decks, even though not all of them end up being completed. Deckbuilding itself is a major part of the hobby. At the same time, precons are a perfect entry point and a great way to try out new strategies without having to figure everything out from scratch.
Of the Marvel precons, Doom Prevails interests me the most. Connive is a familiar mechanic, but it's incredibly versatile and provides a strong foundation for a themed deck. Villains and their over-the-top schemes have always been appealing to me. There's something satisfying about staying under the radar in a Commander game and then suddenly revealing your master plan.
JJ
I love buying precons and playing them. I still have several completely unchanged preconstructed decks at home that I play regularly.
Maggi
These days, I prefer building decks from scratch around a legendary creature rather than buying precons.
We probably won't pick up any of the Marvel precons because we're not particularly hyped about the set. 🙈
Our impression: Their answers showcase the diversity of Commander players—from enjoying untouched precons to building entirely custom decks.
